My in ground roses in winter 2022/23

by Lu

I never know if the winter will be warm or not. Sometimes we have very severe frosts, and I do not know how my roses will survive them. That's why I cover roses for the winter in two layers of a Plant Covers Freeze Protection Floating Row Covers.

I'll tell how I cover roses that grow in the ground (I will tell about roses in pots separately). Before covering, I cut off all the leaves of the roses and unripe shoots; tie the roses and bend down to the ground all the roses that can be bent down.

If the weather permits, I treat the roses with a solution of copper sulfate. Be sure to remove all the old foliage and mulch around the roses. I pour fresh earth under the bases of roses. And I sprinkle ashes around the roses. After that, I install supports around the roses and cover the roses with a coating, leaving holes on both sides for the ventilation of the roses. So they will stand until the temperature drops to -5C. As soon as it becomes stable -5, I cover the whole roses and put jars of mint oil inside these houses so that the mice do not want to spend the winter with my roses. And so they wait for spring.

In the spring, I will open roses gradually, first on one side, preferably on the north, after a few days, I will open a little more and so on.
