Planting Roses: Step-byStep
How to Plant Climbing Roses
- 1. Choose a sunny spot – At least 6 hours of sun daily; near a trellis, fence, or wall.
- 2. Prepare the support – Install a trellis or wires before planting.
- 3. Dig a wide hole – About 18" wide and 12–18" deep.
- 4. Enrich the soil – Mix compost or well-rotted manure into the soil.
- 5. Soak the rose – If bare-root, soak in water for a few hours before planting.
- 6. Plant at correct depth – Place the graft union 1–2" below soil level (in cold climates).
- 7. Backfill and firm soil – Fill in soil, press gently to remove air pockets.
- 8. Water well – Deep watering after planting.
- 9. Mulch – Apply mulch around the base, avoiding the stem.
- 10. Tie canes loosely – Attach young canes to the support at an angle to encourage blooms.
